You obviously havent done your homework. robert neville does not die at the end- there is an alternate ending. And there is no sequel, just a prequel so there is no "sticky situation" around his death because he does not die at the start

This was from 2008 and we have since learned that it might be a prequel.
In the film that was released Robert Neville dies, so we have to take that as what happened. Just because there is an alternate ending on the DVD doesn't mean we have to follow that just because we prefer it.
