Silver Surfer movie not happening anytime soon
Edit: ah ok i see where its going...they at the water guys living place .. just saw em in background...so we'll see that in beginnning of the movie
Water (heroes) = white
Air (heroes)= white
Earth (minor)= East Asian/African
and Fire (villains) = South Asian/Middle Eastern/Maori/white... wtf?
Okay, if you can't see a problem here, you need to readjust your apathy goggles (i.e. take them the heck off!)
Second, this is a serious problem because TLA is not an isolated incident. Tell me this, how many East Asian movie protagonists have there been in U.S. films? There's simply too long of a history of roles written for minorities being whitewashed. And unfortunately Yellowface is still just way too common.
Third, "racism happens, get over it." Obviously you're sitting on a nice comfy couch of privilege. Rape happens too, does that make it okay? Just because something happens and happens all the time does not make it OK. Frankly, I'm sad for you that you have such a warped view of the world.
P.S. Thanks to... ?????, for having my back and presenting solid points on the subject.
Avatar forver!
Why isn't there someone out there who can do amazing shows like Dragon Ball Z and Avatar justice?
The difference between Caucasians being depicted as villains in the international film circuit (if that is what you mean) is because of a country that has a homagenous race. They are not exactly educated on equality and representation just like the US or Canada is. Meanwhile, the US HAS a mixing pot of difference races and ethnicities and despite that, they NEVER get the front and center attention like in other countries (ie. Japan has an all Japanese cast). In fact, we NEVER get acknowledged that besides the stereotypes, we CAN act, we CAN sing, we CAN dance if Hollywood would just GIVE us a good roll to slip into. This is NOT one of them!
Even though Zuko does end up as one of the protagonists later in the series, people who have NEVER seen the animated version of Avatar do not know this. As a Japanese-American, I view this as the ever STILL discrimination of depiction that Middle-Easterns are considered 'the dark-skinned evil axis of power.' I am sick and tired of it!
I would have been fine with Dev Patel as Sokka instead, but they go and cast him in THIS role that does not suit, nor even look the part of the character! Yes, racism happens all the time, but IT HAS TO STOP! PERIOD.
I'm sticking with this:
Water = Eskimos in real world | Southeast Asian and South Asian races can also be casted
Air = Tibet in real world | East Asians can also be casted
Earth = China in real world | East Asians can also be casted
Fire = Japan in real world | East Asians can also be casted
I'm not specific as to races but at least look the part. Ugh! Please
the katara is supposed to have dark skin while zuko is supposed to be pale as ashes
and his scar is supposed to be way more profound.
the director really doesn't know what he is doing
i mean has he seen the show? katara should be the southasian character while zuko should be azn or caucasian
and where is zuko's ponytail? that was his trademark
i wish i could have gone to play casting as katara my skins the same tone
this is what i beleive
water- cast indian
air- thai, tibet
earth- phillipino, chinese
fire- japanese
wwho's with me?
did all of you throwing fits about this care when Micheal Clark Duncan played Kingpin in Daredevil?
would you rather have a cast that looks perfect but could be out acted by a second grade play? or a cast that doesnt exactly fit the bill, but has the talent to be in front of the camera?
yes, the casting is off, but for all we know, those could have been the best people for the roles (acting wise). there could have been people that might have physically fit the bill better but couldnt act in a diaper commercial.
all of you talk about how this nation should be played by only this ethnicity. well what if said ethnicity didnt show up for the casting?
would you just drop the entire nation and go with out a water tribe, or the air nomads? or what if the people that showed up
I laughed. XD
But anyway, I don't see a reason to complain anymore since that's all we can do. >.< It honestly won't change anything since they are already filming. I don't like the casting choices either, I was hoping for some sort of Asian looks as well since the cartoon simply screamed...ASIAN!!! There were no Europeans or Africans and what not on the Avatar cartoon. It was completely Asian themed that included Asians from all over the world.....Chinese, Japanese, Eskimo/Inuit, Indian, Hawaiian, Korean....etc....There were no whites..there were no blacks.....just Asian...some people don't know this....However...again, there is nothing we can do but complain.....so I stopped complaining about the casting...they won't change it no matter how pissed off the fans get...they will continue it anyway. I just hope the action is good...that's all I'm rooting for right now...I hope it's worth it..... T.T
