SUPERMAN RETURNS WAS A GOOD MOVIE, THE REASON IT DID NOT MEET EXPECTATIONS IS THAT NO NEW STORY LINE (WORTHWHILE AT LEAST) WAS INTRODUCED. THE ONLY THING NEW WAS THE STUPID IDEA OF SINGER AND HIS LITTLE "BUDDIES" TO MAKE SUPERMAN A DEAD-BEAT DAD. OTHERWISE I THINK IT WAS WELL DONE. THIS IS WHY BATMAN BEGINS WAS SO SUCCESSFULL AND WHY SMALLVILLE IS SUCCESSFUL, THEY SHOW WHAT LEAD UP TO "SUPERMAN". SO ITS TOO LATE FOR THAT NOW UNLESS THEY DO A PREQUEL.

ONE GOOD IDEA WOULD BE TO DEAL WITH THE DAY TO DAY THINGS, LIKE HOW DOES SUPERMAN TAKE A DUMP? WHEN HE GOES TO THE CAN DOES HE HAVE TO HOLD BACK HIS PISS FOR FEAR OF TEARING UP THE TOILET?

Re: Superman Reboot Confirmed. And we don't need a brooding, somber Superman any more than we needed that weepy, overemotional one. The key is to remember his farmboy Methodist roots and power up a villain that's nasty enough and powerful enough to make us hate him and root for the big blue boy scout. His rogue's gallery ought to rock and sock but Hollywood is so brain dead from Disney and formula films it couldn't do jackshit with the potential inherent in this property. Thank Mrs Church I can read - at least I can still enjoy the comic book.

Re: Superman Reboot Confirmed. Absolutely there were serious plot elements that were unnecessary and unneeded---Superman's son?---and the whole Lex Luthor/real estate storyline is tired and overdone but the picture as a whole was satisfying as a reintroduction to the character. Brian Singer's decision not to start completely over but pick up after Superman II was a good decision. Brandon Routh did an excellent job. And Kevin Spacey's Lex Luthor was far superior to the campy portrayal written for Gene Hackman.

As far as the next "reboot" is concerned, I would be disappointed to see Brandon Routh replaced by someone with more "star quality." The Superman character and the film itself should sell the picture not the actor who is portraying him. I agree that "superhero" films in general need to be written to reflect a more serious or realistic tone, if that is what you mean by "darker," but Superman is NOT a dark character and Warner Brothers would be making a HUGE mistake to try and force him into that mold. The movie itself could be written more seriously, but Superman is a character of hope and light and definitely should not be re-created for film as a Batman type character just to satisfy some current movie genre trend.

Re: Superman Reboot Confirmed. It was like a homage to excellent Donner/Reeves era and we've seen all that before. No point in paying homage a second time.

I like the idea of setting super hero movies in (close to) real world environments, much like the recent Batman's. Something similar for Superman could be a real Good Thing.
